After several clues with patent registrations, BMW Motorrad unveiled the CE 04. A “new style of urban two-wheel mobility” as they define.

BMW Motorrad is presenting a version of the BMW Motorrad Concept Link at #NEXTGen 2020.The BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04 is going to take on the urban commuter and his needs. The design and connectivity solutions are where BWM placed some of their focus on this model, as it sets out to bite some of the electric scooter segment.

Not a lot of technical data has been poured into this announcement, so it is unclear what motor size, battery pack and range it is capable of, and BMW has put their announcement focus on the design. This comes after several hints on coming designs from BMW in the electric space, revealed from patent filings.

“Electric mobility is a central drive system for the BMW Group and we are consistently relying on this technology in our sustainability strategy. Electric drives are also a current topic for BMW Motorrad, especially for the urban environment. Since 2013, we have been a pioneer in this area with the BMW C evolution scooter. The BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04 is the logical continuation of the electromobility strategy for urban conurbations and provides a concrete preview of what a contemporary production vehicle could look like, with which we will take two-wheel electric mobility in metropolitan areas to a new level, both technically and visually,”

Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad.

The design of the Definition CE 04 stands out from the pack, as it takes on sharp lines and edges, for a more agressive looks. That’s what BMW define as ‘urban aesthetic’, and it’s hard to disagree with that. It’s modern, it’s urban and the design has clearly had much thought into it. Now that designers only need to fit an electric motor and battery pack, they finally realized the space that gives for storage and design features that may not be possible to achieve with ICE motors.

We deliberately wanted to create a fashionable look that is urban yet highly functional rather than classic motorcycle clothing. We want to develop products with which you can get off the vehicle and go about your everyday business hassle-free. At the same time, the rider equipment offers the protection you are used to from BMW Motorrad and even becomes part of the vehicle communication to the outside world”

Julia Lein, Head of Rider Equipment Design at BMW Motorrad.

The connectivity offered on this scooter was key for BMW, allowing the rider to connect via a combination of the BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04 and their smartphone. They placed a 10.25-inch display – the largest so far in the scooter space, that “serves as an interface between the rider’s analogue and digital worlds”.

What we can gather off of this, since BMW does not specify the models technical details, is maybe a more general expectation range of BMW for the coming years. It is clear that BMW motorrad is pushing forward with electric models, be it scooters or motorcycles, which we could expect to see coming next. They have had buzz over patent filing, and after taking this leap forward, one could easily think of much more to come in the future from BMW.
