Zero Issues A Recall Notice After A DC-DC Converter Issue On 2021 Models

NHTSA Recall notice shows that a defect exists in 2021 models, across several models, but a limited sum of Zero motorcycles.

Zero Motorcycles has issues a recall notice on the NHTSA. After they determined that a defect, exists on certain 2021 Model Year SR, S, DSR, DS, FX and FXS model motorcycles built between August 19, 2020 and October 5, 2020. The issue comes from a DC-DC converter that may have insufficient power output margin.

The effected population is apparently only 64 motorcycles that includes selected 2021 model year Zero SR, S, DSR, DS, FX and FXS built between these dates, where the DC-DC converter has an insufficient power output margin to operate the anti-lock braking system (ABS), instruments, lights, indicators, and any accessories that are connected to the accessory outlet at once.

As the notice states:

The DC-DC converter will be replaced from the incorrect “B” converter to the correct “A” by the label on the components. NHTSA

Zero will notify owners, and dealers will replace the DC-DC converter, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin November 2, 2020. Owners may contact Zero customer service at 1-888-841-8085. Zero’s number for this recall is SV-ZMC-021-019.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

So, what can we make of this? Here’s our takeaway:

The component swap appears to be a simple task, as we always see in electric powered vehicles. The simplicity of repairs and relative low cost is always a remarkable advantage for EVs. The statements mentioned a very low amount of impacted motorcycles, which is good news for Zero on this recall. And with the great technology that Zero puts out, they have been playing the big league game for long enough to understand these issues an react accordingly to handle recalls on the best possible outcome for riders and company.

Zero has been a pioneer in the space all along, they have the diversity, the track record and lastly the technology advantages of being a veteran in this space and having wheels on the ground, which improves tech at a faster rate. The company has great product and bought a great fan base for their motorcycles. This should be but a mere bump in the road.
